Traditional radio broadcasts have long been a staple for religious programming, but in an era dominated by digital media, ministries might wonder which platform resonates most with listeners —radio or podcasts. We know from previous research that deeper engagement is a key that unlocks the Bible's life-changing potential (CBE, 2012). When people are actively listening to Scripture—receiving, reflecting on, and responding to its truths—God’s Word comes alive in their hearts and minds. But how do we cultivate this kind of engagement in a culture saturated with distractions?
In a recent study of our popular Bible-study program, Discover the Word from Our Daily Bread Ministries, we found that while the program’s radio and podcast audiences are equally committed to Bible study and spiritual growth, podcasts offer unique advantages that enhance listener engagement. Our survey revealed that podcast listeners are more likely to take notes, read the Bible 19% more frequently and reflect more on the program than radio listener counterparts. We also discovered that for this program, podcast listeners were more likely to listen with their spouses and donate to the ministry (CBE, 2024).

Reaching the Ready
Podcasts are a powerful tool because they can be accessed anytime, anywhere, and they easily integrate into busy schedules. Since podcasts can be downloaded on demand, people are ready to listen with intentionality and fewer distractions. The format of podcasts also creates a sense of personal connection, which may help people engage with the content on a deeper level. Additionally, podcasts allow for nuanced conversations and in-depth exploration of biblical themes.
That said, radio still plays an important part in Bible engagement. Although radio listeners tend to be more distracted while listening to a program (for example, listening while driving or cleaning), our Discover the Word study indicates Christian radio listeners are loyal audiences who are committed to Bible study and growing in their faith.
Radio also has a greater reach, with over 82% of the US population turning in weekly, whereas podcasts, despite growing popularity, tend to cater to more specialized audiences, with 42% of the US population listening monthly (Pew Research, 2023).
Maximizing the Potential for Bible Engagement
Regardless of the platform—podcasts or radio—creating engaging content is essential. To harness the full potential of audio content for Bible engagement, here are a few strategies to consider based, in part, on open-ended responses from listeners:
Share personal stories and testimonies that illustrate the relevance of Scripture in everyday life.
Incorporate questions, discussion prompts, and opportunities for listeners to reflect on the material.
Feature a variety of perspectives and experiences to broaden understanding.
Be genuine and transparent in your own faith journey, acknowledging doubts and struggles along the way.
Invite listener participation by encouraging listeners to share their thoughts, insights, and experiences through social media or email.
Provide listeners with access to study guides, articles, and other materials that complement the podcast (or radio program) content.
Create online forums or groups where listeners can connect with one another, share their faith journeys, and support each other's growth.
Avenues for Transformational Change
Ultimately, the goal for podcasts and Christian radio programming is to create avenues for transformational change. By embracing innovative platforms and crafting engaging content, ministries can effectively reach new audiences exactly where they are, encouraging deeper engagement with God’s Word, and inspiring transformative change in the lives of listeners.
